    For November 2008

I’m undertaking a brand-new-to-me challenge this November—to write an entire novel in one month. The first time I heard about this November movement, I thought it sounded insane. I’m someone who typically works on a novel for years, picking it up when I have time and putting it in the drawer when other deadlines dominate.

However, I’ve been giving talks about my recovery from breast cancer and encouraging people to ask themselves the same question a holistic nurse asked me shortly after my surgery—if you could do anything with your life, what would it be? For me, there was no doubt. I would write fiction and actually get it published. I’m not only talking about short stories, with which I’ve had some success; I’m seeing novels on bookstore shelves with my name on them. And if that dream is ever going to become a reality, I have to be willing to put in the time, even if it requires some sacrifices.

So here’s to writing 50,000 words this month. And please excuse me while I go make another cup of tea and gather some chocolate to fuel my journey!
